I think that this is basically resolved, and now the issue is just the
original bug from 2009 reported here:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/alsa-driver/+bug/359361
With the exception that the alsa driver when loading and unloading
sometimes needs to be completely reloaded via rebooting
you need to ask the author and the alsa developer if iec958 or hdmi does
not work
