I think that this is basically resolved, and now the issue is just the
original bug from 2009 reported here:

With the exception that the alsa driver when loading and unloading
sometimes needs to be completely reloaded via rebooting the computer.
alsa force-reload used to work, but that command now seems to do nothing
at all (no text to terminal, no change in behavior).
