the problem resolved with one of the system updates some time after my
bug report last year. I apologize for not mentioning that. Do you
recommend the BIOS update anyway?

anis, as per download.lenovo.com/express/ddfm.html an update is
available for your BIOS (3.24/3.25). If you update to this, does it
change anything?
If not, could you please both specify what happened, and provide the output of
the following terminal command:
sudo dmidecode -s bios-version && sud
Any suggestions what I could/should do? Does it make sense to install
whatever upgrades the Upgrade Manager suggests or should I keep the
system in the way it's now?

I tried adding an "acpi=off"line to grub: ubuntu booted and gave me a
short glimpse of my desktop but after a few seconds the system shut down

Another Add-On: Precise was running nicely before (after some Wifi
problems when upgrading from oneiric), the current issue only appeared

Can't start the terminal unfortunately.
I followed the instructions given in the link.
DONE 1. Boot the machine.
APPEARS AUTOMAT. 2. During the BIOS screen, press the shift key and hold it
down. You should see the GRUB menu after the BIOS loads.
