On 8.10 beta, I can remove the file ~/.xinput.d/fr_FR and it still works on GTK
and KDE applications (i.e. everywhere).
However, removing .scim/global remove the Ctrl+Space ability, I must manually
select "scim" as the input method for it to work.
im-switch -l give me "scim" as input method.
I finally got it to work. I've installed everything related to scim (apart from
scim_uim).
Once scim is launched (you have the icon) and if it does not work, try the
following. Open gedit and right click in the text area.
Click on "Input method" and change it to scim. Now the ctrl+space and left
I still have the problem even when doing a "im-switch -s scim-immodule"
Allen, did you do additional steps to have the left click work ?

I confirm this bug too.
The problem is with GS failing on some EPS file in my case.
Using the
sudo update-alternatives --config gs
as proposed by Commodore64 solved the problem.
The package having problem is gs-esp.
Both gs-gpl and gs-apfl are fine with the files.
This is a major issue for anyone
