Hi Sebastian,
sorry for the delay. I was too busy lately.
I just had a look at the dvd again and this time there is no problem
anymore. So this issue appears to be gone - like most of the other
issues i reported - while gnome matured.

When updating the system with update-manager the download speed is about
50kBit, which is too slow for 16MBit DSL.
When i create heavy I/O load on the harddrive by running baobab for "/", the
download speed increases more than tenfold
Only possibility would be fglrx. The driver (2:8.512-0ubuntu1) is
installed but - according to the Hardware Drivers tool - unused. lsmod
shows the "radeon" driver as loaded. Trying to do a glxinfo results in a
segfault of the tool.
Possibly related is a number of attempted beeps on Gnome startup.

Hmm, getting nowhere really.
I did a few fresh installations and it failed two out of five times after i've
been trying to enable the wireless adapter. I've compared the output of lsmod
