I believe I encountered the same problem on a Dell Inspiron 1440 laptop
after upgrading from Jaunty to Karmic: rendering was unbearably slow,
the error messages about DRM in Xorg.0.log were the same, and the
/dev/dri directory did not exist.

I upgraded from ubuntu 9.04 to 9.10. I have not had any major problems
as of yet.
When my screen was locked I tried to log back in, but accidentally inserted
the wrong password. So the login-prompt locks for a bit
and starts shaking
Yes, I was able to reproduce it. Tried more than ones.

ptn, have you checked you are loading the correct kernel?
To fix a similar problem I manually edited /boot/grub/menu.lst to
replace references to the old kernel (2.6.28-15-generic) with
(2.6.31-14-generic) and hey presto all is well with the touchpad.

Eventually I was able to get it to work.
After several failed tries, the drive was not visible in nautilus, but

a mistake, but since you can't configure it, it is just plain annoying.

installation unfortunately this workaround doesn't work for me. My USB
mouse is fine.
Any more suggestions?

I believe this has to do with the VBRI headers in many mp3 files today.
I installed mp3diags and had it strip out the VBRI header and replace it
with the Xing headers and now the length is fine. Just thought I'd
share.
