breaking out of X using CTRL-ALT-F1, killing xfce4-screensaver and CTRL-
ALT-F7 to return to X works for me to recover the keyboard and mouse

Tested using the test plan I originally provided in the initial bug
report.

After updating packages in a 22.04 ubuntu-mate VM on 24/3/22 I hit this
bug. Additionally of note the Brisk Menu icon in the session changed to
the Gnome "foot" (although the menu seemed unaffected). This logo
reverted to the Ubuntu Mate one after logging out and back in again.

I'm seeing the same thing after the recent update to Thunderbird 78.11.
Ubuntu 21.04 on Wayland. x11 is ok. In my case it appears to be related
