Great, a release crashes during upgrade and pretty much wipes all
personal data, if you want it to work. I would expect such behavior from
an alpha or maybe a beta, but release?

I have seen in many previous posts that the BUG was fixed and the issue was
closed. In the contrary this one here seems to be relatively fresh/alive and
does not suggest that BUG was killed. Although, relatively recent, I have
encountered the same problem that exists now for more than 5 years.

This problem still exists into the latest release 11.10.
Why it suddenly has a problem after release upgrade seems to be a mystery!
There are a lot of proposed workarounds, but non of them has brought my eth0
back alive on boot.

no the time sync. is enabled, however that may only occur once a week.
If you switch between the operating systems, LINUX will set the RTC to UTC,
while Windows does not check if the time zone is UTC or any of the others.
Perhaps it does, but it will run with zero offset from UTC.

I had a XP installation working just fine. When I decided to create a dual boot
system with XUBUNTU (I am not too familiar with the release number) it turned
out to be a bad decision.
The XP installation had their latest Service Pack #3 and the Hard drive was
