Public bug reported: Binary package hint: xubuntu-desktop
Just realized that I commented on a Bug that is already two years old. Downloaded the latest Xubuntu package to install it along with an existing XP Pro Service Pack 3 and NTFS formatted system. Install seemed to work fine until it came to import Documents from the XP install. The Progress Bar stopped at 88% and remained there for about an Hour, that's when I lost patience and used the destroyer button still available on some systems besides the Main power switch. Thinking that the failure happened on the second partition I was quickly tought differently. The Master Boot record and I assume the Partition table is damaged beyond repair. Microsoft's (TM) repair tools failed miserably to restore something useful. In the process of trying to recover lost files I found that the file system seems to be intact and I might have a chance to recover some if not all of my files. I installed a second Hard Drive that I don't care much about to install a (any operating system that can access the files) onto a clean partition. Xububntu failed again and I am using a live run to submit this report. It seems that the Install package has a hard time to handle partitioning although it does not make sense to me. I also downloaded another Image and burned a CD on a different computer, just to make sure. The Media check reported no problems on CD. Never had a problem installing Ubuntu or any other previous Ubuntu release before. In fact I have a Ubuntu Studio running with all the Desktop Fireworks there is and runs great and installed without hickups, however previous installs had been installed as a single operating system. This is my first attempt to install Ubuntu coexistent on a Microsoft (TM) system. Being a HAM radio operator I wanted to install an Application that was developed on a Fedora system and I had problems to run it on the Ubuntu system ( I guess because of the way it uses the Sound System) and I tried Fedora on a different computer, however the Fedora is very sluggish on a slower (600MHz reminds me on an XT at 4MHz) computer, I decided to install Xubuntu because of the lower Overhead and hoping I would get my HAM application to work on it. At this moment I can't get any more information on the incident since the Hard Drive is unbootable and I am more concerned to get my files off it. Hope this will help to track or provide at least an idea that issues with the NTFS partition resizing still exist on some systems and on mine for sure. P.S. The Hard Drive used initially is an Seagate 300GB SATA on a MSI V Series Main Board.
