I solved it by doing a clean (relatively anyway) install, so it was an
upgrade issue either with cruft on my box or some small incompat.

Sorry, I reinstalled from the bottom up and the problem is gone,

just happened since upgrade to 9.10
Opening old file, opening new file all result in the same lock up.
using other tools in the tool bar or other commands from the drop menus do not
cause problem.

I was hoping to link this to my laptop audio bug since it seems to be the same
thing. I've got three computers, all running 8.04. An inspiron1420, and then
two that I put together myself, one with a P4 and VIA chipset and the other
