Actually it just happened when I set xclock to launch on start-up.
Previously xclock appeared (near top of screen but nearer to the center)
with no problems but then when it appeared in the top left corner, it's
title bar was obscured and again could not move it.

Unfortunately I don't have a live cd. But could you let me know which
file(s) I can modify to try to launch gnome-terminal on start-up? That
could also give more info if I am able to launch on start-up via another
method.
