After an initial 64bit install I was updating through the Update Manager

Dual monitor, laptop screen went "liney" (this is normal when X is
shutting down), console login appeared on external monitor. It was there
long enough for me to enter userid and password but before I got a
command prompt it had restarted X and I had the crash detection icon in
the dock
Just a comment - when running the graphical version from a menu it fails
silently - the app just disappears and it wasn't until I ran it from a
shell that I could see what was wrong.

OK, just FYI:
This only happens on one box - 2 others (laptop, desktop) run fine with
no errors.
If I uninstall xsane, then the Gimp starts just fine. On *this* box it
always hangs. When I do a ps I see this:

I had the problem where swap wasn't getting activated on boot, but my
issue was that the UUID in /etc/fstab didn't match the vol_id on the
swap partition.
How that happened I don't have any idea, but setting /etc/fstab to match
the vol_id fixed it.
