OK, just FYI:

This only happens on one box - 2 others (laptop, desktop) run fine with
no errors.

If I uninstall xsane, then the Gimp starts just fine. On *this* box it
always hangs. When I do a ps I see this:

kenw      9011  0.0  0.1  14592  2992 ?        D    11:15
0:00 /usr/lib/gimp/2.0/plug-ins/xsane -gimp 9 8 -query 0

I ran just that command under gdb and got the following:

(xsane:9163): GLib-WARNING
**: /build/buildd/glib2.0-2.14.1/glib/giounix.c:400Error while getting
flags for FD: Bad file descriptor (9)

(xsane:9163): GLib-WARNING
**: /build/buildd/glib2.0-2.14.1/glib/giounix.c:400Error while getting
flags for FD: Bad file descriptor (9)

(xsane:9163): GLib-CRITICAL **: g_io_channel_write_chars: assertion
`channel->is_writeable' failed

(xsane:9163): LibGimp-WARNING **: xsane: gimp_flush(): error

(xsane:9163): GLib-CRITICAL **: g_io_channel_write_chars: assertion
`channel->is_writeable' failed

(xsane:9163): LibGimp-WARNING **: xsane: gimp_flush(): error

Program exited normally.

Now, it's possible that running the command outside of the Gimp may
cause the errors you see above.

I can say that once it hangs and I interrupt gdb it's always in
_kernel_vsyscall if that helps.
