This happens in Lucid as well. Kernel version: 2.6.32-24-generic, 64bit
system. The make.log is nearly identical:

Just responding to myself here:
I found an acceptable workaround. I downloaded and installed the
catalyst driver from ati's web site. The installer script for this
driver puts the fglrx_dri.so into the /usr/lib32/dri/ as well as in the
/usr/lib/dri. Now everything works again.

I second that. When I tried to install the maven2 package it tries to
install - amongst many other things that I don't want and that are not
necessary to run maven - gcj (I have the sun jdk, what do I need gcj
for???) and ant. I attached my output from apt-get install maven2 since
it is in English
I just did a fresh install of Jaunty 64Bit and I needed to add this line
to the alsa-base.conf. Isn't there a way to add this line by default?
Otherwise everybody with this problem is required to find this bug
report and to do the change manually.

I have no idea if this is related at all, please forgive me if it is not.
I had the same symptoms as you (Casey) described them in this bug description,
the other bug and in the forum thread. I finally was able to track it down to
the NetworkManager.

The update fixed the issue for me, too.
I had the problem before and just disabled the proposed updates. After I saw
that this fix came in I enabled the proposed updates again and it worked fine.
It did remove the libnspr4 package and upgraded the libnspr4-0d package.

After uninstalling it, I was able to log into any Desktop Environment I had
installed (Gnome, KDE, XFCE) without any error messages.
