Thanks, Timo. Your suggestion brought me to the solution of my problem.

I had the same problem and fixed it by uninstalling xserver-xgl after reading 
Timo's post.
After uninstalling it, I was able to log into any Desktop Environment I had 
installed (Gnome, KDE, XFCE) without any error messages. Even the 
gnome-setting-manager error message is gone. Desktop effects work also just 
fine now.

I have an ATI Radeon Mobility 9600.

I hope this info helps others to resolve their problems with this error
message as well.
