anything with applications, etc., before the installation. This time it
didn't lock up but gave me the partition info
Installer syslog is all from June 4th, nothing related to the
installation attempt.
The var/log/syslog may have the problem at 8:55

Sorry, this is a desktop live disk; I figured that things
had to work moderately well before trying install so I
downloaded the live CD of the Desktop (not for server, not
a net installation, etc.)

locks up -- no activity for 20 minutes.
Under Disks, I show 7 partitions, with 1 being 0.03MiB, 2 being 953.67
MiB
That should be partition 4 is a 1.4 gig swap partition.
