John: I need to withdraw the bug report. At 2300 hours (local time) I went back to redo the install and reproduce the problem. The only difference was that this time I didn't do anything with applications, etc., before the installation. This time it didn't lock up but gave me the partition info. After a couple of miscues with the NewWorld partition, I completed the installation.
When I went to inform you the launchpad system was updating/backing up and I couldn't respond then.
