Hi sir,
Maybe this not bug, maybe it a bug to me only.
With Kubuntu 9.10 I have just switched to Kubuntu desktop from Gnome

I switch off the auto login and then reboot, when login menu come up, I can
hear the boot sound, after login in manually sound is ok,
If I turn on auto login by clicking System->System administration->login
window->security's option and then reboot,
it can login correctly
I have just drive Ubuntu 8.10 Yes I met this issue as well
I change all $echo into $ECHO in that file
the problem is fully solved.
