For me its situation B, the splash screen never shows up, boot goes
straight to the screen with the error message.

in the above list has to be:

I have the same error message during boot-process with a clean install
of 10.04 (x64).
But the system comes up, if I boot without external HDMI monitor
connected. I'm able to boot with the external monitor if I do the
following:
- Press "E" in GRUB startup page
- Add option "noplymouth" at the en

After several tries I just found the following solution for Kubuntu
Alternate installation, which should work for Ubuntu as well:
- Mount your USB drive
- Install and start UNetbootin
- Select Distribution "Kubuntu"
- Select a "HdMedia" subcategory entry, I used "10.04_HdMedia_x86"
