I had a small problem with Peter's explanation, /etc/default/acpi-
support and /etc/init.d/laptop-mode aren't begin reinstalled. Could you
please run
su
dpkg --purge --force-depends laptop-mode-tools acpi-support
apt-get install laptop-mode-tools acpi-support
vi /etc/default/acpi-support #
There doesn't appear to be any such file
$ ls /etc/default/
acpid bluetooth devpts linux-restricted-modules-common rsync
acpi-support bootlogd gdm locale syslogd
alsa brltty hal ntpdate tmpfs
apmd
I see the script checks for this one next

Sorry if I've not explained properly, this is my first attempt at a bug
report.
The problem I had to start with was that the CPU fan was running full speed all
the time. Also, when I ran
"sudo /etc/init.d/laptop-mode restart", it exited without any feedback. So I
