I'm also getting the same problem on a (rather old) Dell Dimension 2400.
The problem can occur after logging in and leaving the PC alone with no
further interaction. Sometimes it take 10-20 mins and other tim

This old PC is currently running 9.10 satisfactorily (except it still needs
external speakers) but it's not mine and as its owner relies on it for work,
she would prefer to leave this particular dog asleep (at least until she's next
on holidays).

See Bug #505310.
In the course of trying to find out why choice of DVI port should affect
the ability of 9.10 to boot, I was asked to run 'apport-collect -p xorg

I was then asked to run 'ifcon

CTRL+ALT+F1 does work with the DVI port that doesn't normally display
the login screen. Running sudo DISPLAY=:0.0 xrandr -q 2>&1 | tee
~/xrandr.log results in the following (I'll have type it in as I don't
know how the save the logfile)

I'm a user vis-a-vis a techo so you'll have to hold my hand.
Ctrl+Alt+F1 works and I'm into a terminal. What do I need to type in to get you
the appropriate debugging information?

After selecting 9.10 in GRUB it gets as far as a black screen with a
white "ubuntu" symbol on it - then it shows "entering power save" mode.
If I use the other DVI outlet, 9.10 boots and works fine.

I wasn't proposing to continue to use the main server indefinitely. With
respect to the Australian mirror, I had been trying to update off it for
several days without success. If the sync process normally completes in

Thanks for your help. I changed from "server for Australia" to "main
server" and problem fixed. I assume the Launchpad team will alert the
administrator for "server for Australia".

There was only one upgrade and as I recall is it was adobe-flashplugin.
I obviously didn't expect a problem and didn't pay a lot of attention.

At the end of the session I found I could only turn off my PC using the
power point on the wall. On rebooting it appears to have repaired
