After upgrading to 20.04, the power profile was set to suspend after 20
minutes of inactivity.

Since I ran into this bug again today, and since it hasn't been touched
in the 5 years since I reported it, I thought I would just add the code
to program around it, for those people who come here with the same
problem (if there are such people).

For others who end up here unable to activate Livepatch because of this
bug, here is how you can activate it from the command line:
1. sudo snap install canonical-livepatch
2. go to https://auth.livepatch.canonical.com and generate a token.
3. sudo canonical-livepatch enable
and you're done.

Just to report that this really discourages me from doing work to report
bugs.
I put quite a lot of work into reporting a bug, discovering what was going
wrong.
Apparently no one does anything.
Ten years later I get a message that this version of the operating system
is no longer supported

me. In fact it bricked my Acer Aspire S7 (which is this report). Luckily
I managed to reinstall 16.04 without problems.
I tried to install 18.04 several times, but it repeatedly failed.

Bear in mind that this bug report is only of a symptom of the real bug,
which is gnome-software hanging during an update (which it seems to do
regularly).
So doing the install and update as explained above fixes the symptom,
but not the bug.

It repeatedly tries to access the drive, and stacks up dozens of
messages

The file system seems to attempt to mount it continually until I eject
the disc (see image).

Just tried it with 16.04 and my Ubuntu phone, and the problem is still
there... indeed rather embarrassing that my Ubuntu computer can't talk
to my Ubuntu phone. This bug is now two years old by the way.

reset; however if you are just using the touch screen, scrolling,
tapping etc, the screen timeout doesn't notice and the screen eventually

termios.h says there are 17 characters (0..16) in the c_cc buffer. If I

When calling ioctl to request some special key bindings, it seems to
return a random value for the Suspend binding (see attached C file).
On my system, if I do a stty -a I get this:
$ stty -a
speed 38400 baud; rows 24; columns 80; line = 0;
intr = ^C; quit = ^\; erase = ^?;
I spoke too soon. Although it doesn't happen so quickly now, and the
ghosts left behing don't flicker anymore, the desktop eventually does
not get redrawn, leaving ghosts of what was on the screen behind.

I fail to see how this bug report can be classified as "invalid". The
crash happened. It is a fault in Ubuntu setup. It needs to be fixed.

Since 14.10 the only way to use the system is with apps full-screen,
because the background/desktop is constantly flickering. If you close a
