I would close this off. I haven't done a network install for ubuntu in a
long time now and it's unlikely I'll have a chance/need to in the
immediate future. I will reopen if it occurs again..

Hardware:
Dell Vostro 1500
2Gb Ram
Intel Core2 T7400
Nvidia 8600
Problem:
1) choosing System -> Administration -> Nvidia X Server settings: Does not
require/use sudo so it cannot save to xorg.conf.
2) Setting the screen resolution in Nvidia X Server settings
I now get most of the way throught the base install.
It then fails on Unable do install the slected kernel.

Ok, Just tested with Kubuntu 804 dvd, (kickstart file is the same as the
one for ubuntu just using kubuntu804 instead if ubuntu804 as the web
dir.

Sorry for delay didn't see your update.
This time using Ubuntu 804 LTS server, I get a different message and it
wont't let me change the mirror :/

I have to agree with Jay, the solution isn't practical for anything
other than home / very small builds.
The expected behaviour would be for the installer to look where its told
and ignore other sources.
Alternatively it could connect to the internet for a secondary list and
then prompt the user
