OK, so I got of my butt and read the logs and googled the error :)
It's reported in Debian at:

So if you are looking to work around this issue, look at the xorg is

I found I was able to ctrl alt f1 out to the console as the desktop was
starting to load.
I then attached strace to the X process, and then switched back to the desktop.
Attached is the log from strace.

The motherboard is a GIGABYTE GA-EG45M-DS2H.
I installed Alpha 6 on it, and everything went wonderfully until the
desktop screen came up for the first time, a
