I solved it in Oneiric by marking acpi=off in the startup menu (F6), but
then I can't connect to wifi.

I ran the Oneiric LiveCD on an HP 6735 AMD Sempron laptop on which
Maverick was working well, and I got a dim screen. Impossible to turn
screen brighter.
These video problems don't seem to be a distribution-specific bug but a
regression in the Linux kernel since they affect more than one
distribut

folder", which is rather pointless, since you can easily drag and drop files
from any folder to your desktop. An option to Copy/Move files to external
storage devices would be much more useful.

Same problem on Acer Aspire 5738. And brightness adjustment didn't work
on Jaunty, either.
Besides, the screen never seems to reach its full brightness and it
flickers sometimes.
