I ran the Oneiric LiveCD on an HP 6735 AMD Sempron laptop on which Maverick was working well, and I got a dim screen. Impossible to turn screen brighter.
These video problems don't seem to be a distribution-specific bug but a regression in the Linux kernel since they affect more than one distribution and are affecting system configurations that used to work well under previous releases of those distributions.
