Hope I'm not muddying the waters, but I see the same warning happening
in other programs as well (eg quodlibet). Perhaps this should be
resolved generically in gnome and not in vim ? Just my 2 cents

Does it help at all to run "grub-mkdevicemap" begore running "update-grub" ?
Is the content of /boot/grub/device.map ok?

If a removable disk is not plugged in when "update-grub" runs, you may get an
error like:
grub-probe: error: Cannot get the real path of `/dev/sdf'
To fix: manually run "grub-mkdevicemap" begore
