I restarted in safe mode. The option was there, I chose it, but the
list is still empty, with the same behavior as before.
I have also completely moved my profile out of the way, creating a new
one, but still no search engines.

I have the same problems as Linus Nordin (comment #17). It occurs in
xterm as well as gnome-terminal. Fresh install of 8.10, same hardware.

The bug, as I reported it, appears to be a duplicate of #270377. I have
closed the upstream Gnome bug, as it's not libvte, but apparently
compiz. (Does not occur at all when compiz is enabled, and anyway
occurs in xterm.)

I started having this same problem when I upgraded from Hardy to
Intrepid. I tend to run into the bug when using vim, especially when
searching for text. When I enter a search term and hit enter, nothing
changes on the screen (it doesn't redraw). Clicking on the title bar
causes the screen to re
