I have not seen this bug after subsequent upgrades to newer releases.
Unfortunately, I do not have any system running Karmic. Thus, unable to
verify on the same release.

Had to implement suggestion from Chris Coulson repeatedly to get back to
a working system.
And intermediate update broke my X, and the system would boot only to
runlevel 2. Kept repeating the apt-get update and apt-get dist-upgrade
commands. Update performed on 24-25 Sep 2009 restored my X to usab

Running Karmic, updated from Jaunty using alternate installer from 12 Aug 2009.
Use the update manager regularly to update the entire system. Has been working
