Thanks for the last two comments - I got in touch with Jeroen who posted
the spinics forum post, and he said that the best way to confirm the
problem was to either boot into Windows 8 safe mode or boot Windows 7
from USB and see what happened there.
Under Windows 8 safe mode there was no perceptib
This is a brand new laptop, so I haven't installed any earlier release

bios using the lenovo updater utility but it doesn't see this version.

Every 15 minutes or so, the cursor stops reacting to input from the
touchpad or trackpoint. Unfortunately this machine has a "clickpad"
instead of separate buttons and so it is impossible to use the machine
without the touchpad, which means that Ubuntu is virtually unusable.

Same for me, 10.04 to 10.10, here is my dist-upgrade contents
"After your package information was updated the essential package
'ubuntu-minimal' can not be found anymore.
This indicates a serious error, please report this bug against the
'update-manager' package and include the files in /var/log
Hope those help. I couldn't see any obvious errors. Unfortunately I'm
probably going to have to reformat this machine so I'm unlikely to be
able to give you any further info on it.

I also have this problem. I am running Ubuntu 8.10 64bit, xserver-xorg-
video-intel 2.2.4.1-1ubuntu10. Max resolution I can get on VGA output
is 1024 x 768 connected to a Dell monitor that I use elsewhere at 1200.
