That is an excellent spot, and I apologise - I had recently updated the
bios using the lenovo updater utility but it doesn't see this version.

So I am now:

jon@mv8:~$ sudo dmidecode -s bios-version && sudo dmidecode -s 
bios-release-dateGJET67WW (2.17 )

jon@mv8:~$ date
Sun Jan 12 23:16:56 GMT 2014

However the problem is still happening:
