Scratch that. Talked to the developer of Asunder, he thinks that it's a
bug in GTK. A bit of googling shows that other people are reporting
similar behavior in Red Hat. See

Public bug reported:
Binary package hint: asunder
Each time you enter the "Preferences" dialog, the "Destination Folder"
target changes to one level up the hierarchy. For example, if I had the
folder set to /data/music/unsorted, the next time I open the dialog it
will set itself to /data/music.
With Daniel's help, i was able to get sound working on my desktop
(thanks again!). I am curious about the resolution of this issue as
won't fix. If I'm understanding that right, the issue is that the above
mentioned switch defaults to be muted. What prevents the default from
being set to unmuted
Public bug reported:
Binary package hint: pulseaudio
New install, sound works fine in Windows. Audigy 2, previously worked
in 8.10. Nothing appears to be muted. When using pauvmonitor and
playing an mp3 through Totem, monitor shows activity on left/right
channels.

that this issue originated on. :)

Hmm... I don't think so. I only vaguely remember this one... I don't
think I've seen it since installing gutsy.
Thanks for following up though.

Public bug reported:
Since installing Ubuntu 7.04 x64, I've had an issue where trying to use
the numeric keypad to enter numbers would cause the pointer to jump, as
if "Mouse Keys" were enabled. However, the pointer would not move
consistently and there would suddenly be areas of the screen that
