I've been running screen now for 5 days with no issues. I think the
problem might only exist when using byobu - I'll start a nwe byobu
session and see what happens It might mean this bug needs
reassigning to a different package though

This is indeed an awful feature.. I accidently clicked on it wondering
what it was, and even after closing the application I'm getting
notifications appear about a whole load of updates I have no interest
in! This should be a configurable option, and disabled by default.

I personally just installed my system using debootstrap, bypassing the
installer. I wasn't best pleased about having to do it , but i'm
posting this from my ubuntu install - so it worked :)
I'd like a 'advanced' option perhaps, that allows you to bypass this
check, with a warning that states that
