My conclusion were, that the xserver is not involved. Presumably the
cdemu applet just triggers something when it is loaded as part of the
user's session.

Same problem here. Alas, it was sufficient to prevent vhba.ko kernel module
from loading.

Well, there are similar problems around, i.e. I hear no music although
pressing the test button in sound system configuration gives me the
