I was merely alerted to a crash, I was not using any chat program. I did
remove the ethernet cable from my system and then plug it back in.
Perhaps it's not chat related at all, but instead a network issue? Maybe
a port not closing cleanly?

Yes, this bug still affects me. Tonight for testing purposes I removed
all of the old OpenOffice.org install and turned off the PPA. I then
rebooted and installed the repository version of OpenOffice.org. The new
installation had the same problem under kernel 15. However, upon reboot
into kernel 14
