Tested with: flashplugin-installer/flashplugin-nonfree combo as well as
adobe-flashplayer.

Actually, you have quite enough to figure this out. From my
description, and the account of comment #3 you know:
1. hostname expects a specific binding to the local hostname in /etc/hosts
2. it is not in /etc/hosts by default, forcing users to add it manually to
resolve the issue.

no matter what, every new window and when firefox opens - it opens in
full screen mode. Yes, I know about hitting F11, but why on earth

I concur with this assessment as I have encountered my system caught in
an endless reboot-loop if iTCO_wdt is not in the /etc/modprobe.d
/blacklist-watchdog. Please remedy.

hostname: Unknown host
hostname by itself returns a short host name.
In fact, if you use *any* command line options it outputs the error
message. I think the source code requires review and fixing.
