Public bug reported:
Binary package hint: gcompris
In ubuntu 8.10 the game "computer/mouse/erase" freezes for me.
I'm using compiz, gcompris in full screen 800x600.
Playing this game it freezes relatively often: the GUI turns gray (probably the
compiz action for inactive windows). The mouse is
just one thing...
on my card (radeon7000/VE) all worked fine with the driver 6.6.3 from 7.04.
it's freezing with 6.7.195 from 7.10.
also, i bought specifically my card at the time because ATI developped free
drivers (it was a while back). at the time they gave NDA docs and paid some
people to de
i can't understand why you close this bug.. when tons and tons of people
confirmed a problem of freeze with the open drivers and ATI cards, also
in Hardy (personally I can only confirm it in 7.10).
the most recent would be comment #146, up-to-date as of 2008-02-21, on
hardy.

OK, I assume the bug to follow is now #195051. I subscribed to it now.
That would mean that closing this bug is an administrative/cleanup
action and that developers acknowledge that there is a bug (which there
is). Fine with me then.

for what it's worth, even if i wanted to use the closed source driver (and i'd
rather use an outdated ubuntu), i can't because my graphics card is not
supported anymore by that driver.

sorry, but you didn't read the comments properly. at least for me (radeon
7000/VE, r100), the computer freezes after 20min-1 hour of use even when I
don't use compiz nor any other 3d applic
if it's fixed in hardy, it might be a combination of newer X *and* newer ATI
driver.
keep in mind that xorg is newer in hardy.
for gutsy, i think the simplest solution is just to use the feisty ATI
driver. it completely stopped the lockups for me. you just install the
feisty ATI driver, *no* othe
I think the reasoning is wrong here.
so, we are in the situation that fsck recovery could trigger data loss.
so, it's dangerous.
question is... what is the alternative for the user?
who is going to repair a filesystem corruption in any other way than fsck?
ever? I mean... basically there is only

using the version 6.6 as suggested by _merou stopped the freezes i had. in my
case (7000/VE) I even had freezes without any 3d going on. I think it was also
freezing when doing Xv. not sure. anyway... going to 6.6 fixed the problem.
I didn't try compiz though.
If others want to try, you can get
FWIW, i was also out of the room when it froze without compiz.
one possibility could be a 3d screensaver being initialized and freezing the
box trying to display some 3d... note that there was no trace of screensaver on
my desktop at all... but that would not be impossible, I guess. Most of the
i also got now a moving mouse freeze with compiz disabled. i just had
firefox, thunderbird and totem playing an OGG file with the GOOM visual
effects.
so it means that compiz makes the freeze appear much faster, but it's
there also without compiz. so this bug happens also in the default

but I see no reason to assume it is directly related to either."
freeze happens when compiz is enabled, within a couple of hours of use,
does not happen when compiz is disabled, for me and some others. QED.
