I would amend comment #26 to say that I had to open the dconf-editor,
browse to '/org/gnome/settings-daemon/peripherals/touchpad/', find the
key called 'touchpad-enabled', and set it to true by checking it.

After upgrading to Oneiric from Natty, this bug affects me. After I kill
gnome-settings-daemon, I am able to enable the touchpad using xinput.
Re-enabling gnome-settings-daemon disables the touchpad again.

Marking this bug invalid. Turns out it was an egregious memory leak in
VLC tanking the whole system. Was finally able to SSH in tonight during
this bug and kill VLC.

I'd love to comply, but as the system is hard-frozen when this bug
occurs, I can't run any commands at that point. It's necessary to hold
the power button to do a hard shutdown.
I'll report back if any of the solutions on the wiki page linked help.

I whipped together an SVG in about 15 minutes. It's not a clipboard but
a paperclip (I thought it'd be easier to distinguish at a glance). The
color is for the Ubuntu-Mono-Dark theme but simple to change.
