I've removed the proprietry NVidia driver, and gone back to the default
drivers. The segfault does not happen with these drivers.

It is very simple to reproduce this behaviour, and it is 100%
repeatable. Attempting to play any video in VLC, or opening VirtualBox
will cause X to segfault. This has happened since I upgraded
10.04-->10.10.

The current work-around suggested has many ramifications, and is not
recommended. A better workaround in my case was to edit the username
(which by default was filled in as root) to my own username, and then

Using the automatic mythtv desktop login option, that automatically
loads mythtv-frontend I am always prompted that it believes I have no
run mythtv-setup previously. I can click "cancel" on this warning and
use mythtv-frontend just fine, with no issues. If I do the setup as
I fixed it without having to uninstall anything just by installing the
package mentioned by nikoo above.
