After applying updates this morning, which included a new update to
kernel 3.0.0-19, my problem has gone away. I'm not sure if the root
cause has been diagnosed and fixed or if my symptoms have disappeared
for some other reason, but from my perspective, all appears to be good
now.

I tried booting per instructions in the kernel debug (removing quiet
splash vt.handoff=7 options and setting gfxpayload=ext).
Well a whole lot of stuff whizzed by before my machine hung. Last meaningful
thing I saw was something like "running init.d scripts top to bottom" then a
ton of entries
to figure out how to do this first.

Same symptoms after upgrade to 3.0.0-19 today. 3.0.0-17 still works
(thankfully!)

My system is updated every couple of days. After a recent upgrade that
