Thanks for the quick reply!
The first option (altering /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf) just removed
all my sound.
The second option is a slight improvement - now my laptop speakers work,
and when I plug my earphones into the output the laptop speakers are
muted, and alsamixer seems to be giving t

When pressing down either of my brightness hotkeys, the brightness only
changes by a tiny amount. It takes over a minute to actually noticeably
change the on-screen brightness. I am running Ubuntu 10.10 on a MacBook

When setting up software center after it has been upgraded, apt reports
lots of errors of the type :softwarecenter.db.update:error. Attached is
a file with all these very similar errors.
Example:

Sorry, it turns out that this is actually fixed. It seems that the
hotkeys are working, but they are nowhere near sensitive enough. (ie. it
takes at least a minute of holding down a key to noticeably change the
brightness)
