I just upgraded from 8.04 to Kubuntu 8.10 and I still get no sound.
This is 32-bit Kubuntu, even though my machine is a dual core amd 64.
Here is some terminal output which might be informative:

Thanks for the info. When I reconnect it takes about 30 to 35 minutes of
"setting channels" before it resumes where it left off downloading
files. At the very least, this should be added to the aforementioned
help page, that "the upgrade aborts now" does not mean all the
downloaded files are lost.

downloaded 7.04 for 10 days using a dialup modem, then after 10 days I
