This is no longer a problem for me running thunderbird 52.8.0 running on Ubuntu
14.04.5 LTS.
It appears that Thunderbird now converts carriage return characters in a
message body into linefeed characters.
As far as I am concerned, this bug is resolved and this bug report can

Google maps are displayed in Firefox with blotches. It can take a few
seconds for the blotches to stablize. It occurs both with the symbolic
maps and the satellite images, and typically gets worse with more
zoomed-in views. The blotches seem to be rather random.

Thunderbird filters do not find some text strings that follow CR (x0d,
carriage return) characters in the body of the email. This problem
occurs whether the filtering is done interactively or with filters saved
in msgFilterRules.dat using the Tools/Message Filters menu item.
Applying the fix at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Audio/InstallingLinuxAlsaDriverModules did fix
my problem; but I needed to reboot to make the change take effect.
I updated that wiki page to make it more obvious that a reboot is
required when using the command line install instructions.

sound works fine under Win7. I've tried the instructions at
