That would explain going from hda to hdc, but not to hdc7. Why did
you switch your hard drive to the cable for the second IDE channel?

It sounds like it sees your Ubuntu drive as being on the second IDE
controller, and as though it is treating it as a logical drive rather
than a primary partition.

Same here. Last night after upgrading I rebooted as I saw it was the
kernel that was updated and the system wouldn't boot. I disconected all
my USB devices and pulled my wireless network card and tried again. No
go. This morning I started up with the 2.6.13 kernel with no problem.
