To get pidgin in the list, remove it from the blacklisted applications
folder:
$ cd ~/.config/indicators/messages/applications-blacklist
$ mkdir ../un-blacklisted
$ mv pidgin-libnotify ../un-blacklisted/

I forgot to mention that 1.2 MiB/s is not considered "crazy slow". I'm
on a cable connection so that's pretty fast imho. I don't know why the
update manager estimated over an hour

please note, I'm running xubuntu gutsy, installed restricted driver, no
change. Installed ATI Official driver in addition to restricted, no
change until I ran aticonfig --initial -f and rebooted. Then, and only

That's my error. glxinfo | grep render shows direct rendering disabled

Had similar problem. Baddrawable error, no firefox. Removed "remember"
settings from ~/.fluxbox/apps and success, firefox now starts normally.
Further delving might discover which remember setting. Position,
Dimensions, Stick were my big three. Had previous constant failure with
starting shaded
To be honest, I can't verify whether this is resolved or not as my laptop
has undergone so many changes that this is no longer applicable (new wifi
card, new battery, new drivers, etc...)
