This is low priority? Really?? This knackers the LAMP stack if MySQL is
clustered, which I would have thought would be considered a pretty hefty
flaw in a server OS.

I have been having a very similar problem, I am running Ubuntu Studio
and the problem only occurs when I am using realtime kernel, if i boot
using generic kernel then my system stays stable, but when I boot using
RT kernel, my system will go very weird after 1 minute - 12 hours. It
looks like it ha
an effective workaround is to have a small script at /etc/network/if-
up.d/start-samba.sh that simply contains the lines:
#!/bin/bash
/etc/init.d/samba restart
