Hmm, I think I've found what triggers the bug--partman only freezes if
there's unpartitioned space (I had around 280 GB reserved for a Windows
7 partition). After formatting the empty space as NTFS with GParted, I
was able to continue with the installation.

+1, can reproduce. Trying to install over a Debian install, and I never
make it to the partitioning stage. Always stuck at the first page of the
wizard. Partman fails with udpkg: not found. /var/log/installer/debug
from running ubiquity --debug is attached.

This isn't a libvisual problem, it's a liboil problem. Using the patched
.deb linked to about halfway down the page in the comments fixes the
issue for me, as did downgrading liboil.

Fixed! Xorg starts with 1152x864 resolution without any problems. Not my
native resolution (1440x900) but good enough to run the installer (and
Restricted Manager is very prompt about asking me to install the ATI
driver after I log in.)

bookmarks.html file anytime that the error comes up.
I'm going to try wiping out my profile folder and saving all the important

X has problems starting on my ATI Mobility Radeon X1400 with the standard VESA
driver.
The error message says that there are no usable screens found when X tries to
start.
I can solve the problem by dropping to a tty with Ctrl-A
Same issue here with gnome-power-manager, except I noticed it out of control
before it really sucked me dry.
I had to force-kill it using kill -9.
