I think I have the problem narrowed down now by generating different
initramfs images. An initramfs image that can mount /dev/mapper/Ubuntu-
root and boot contains the following files:
/etc/udev/rules.d/85-lvm2.rules
/lib/libncurses.so.5 <- Might not be needed
/lib/libreadline.so.5 <- Might not be

When I boot Ubuntu 8.04.1 with linux 2.6.24-19, the following happens:

I think it is. Although I can't test it, another machine being upgraded
while the driver is changed would also cause X to not start. The same
thing would happen if you decide to downgrade from the nv driver to
nvidia -- xorg.conf would point to the wrong driver.

I have both emacs21 and emacs22 installed. When using emacs21, all files
in /etc/emacs/site-start.d are executed but not when using emacs22. This
means that all modes that put 50modename-mode.el files in that directory
is not available in emacs22.
The first time I booted gutsy it indexed for almost a day which I guess
is to be expected since I have almost 100 gb data. But it is still a
very unpleasant experience. A daemon just shouldn't take over your
computer like that unless explicitly asked to. Now it "only" spends
about 20 mins each time

between GIMP and gThumb, but isn't.
