Public bug reported:

When I boot Ubuntu 8.04.1 with linux 2.6.24-19, the following happens:

... nothing for 3 minutes....

ALERT! /dev/mapper/Ubuntu-root does not exist. Dropping to a shell!

and I'm thrown into a rescue shell. The boot command is:

/vmlinuz-2.6.24-19-generic root=/dev/mapper/Ubuntu-root ro quiet splash

But when I boot with 2.6.22-14-generic instead, everything works fine.
Even though the same boot command is used to boot both kernels.

** Affects: linux (Ubuntu)
     Importance: Undecided
         Status: New
