On the advice of a member of my local LUG I commented out the
"model" parameter from /etc/modules.d/alsa.
Now when I modprobe snd-ali5451 there is a different error:

Yikes! Going over what I have here so far I see that there is
nothing to indicate that the module ever did load- I forgot to do a
lsmod and post it. All I can say is that I modprobed the snd-ali5451 on
the previous occasions, and it showed up in lsmod afterward. I guess
it's not necessary to
Today the module no longer loads. Yesterday I installed PulseAudio and OSS
thinking somehow it might help. I'm attaching today's dmesg output, see lines

The machine is a KDS Valiant 671XH laptop with the ALi5451 sound hardware (as
reported by lspci).
Original install was Gutsy, sound did not work, snd-ali5451 module missing from
lsmod, modprobe'd it but no joy. When trying to play an OGG file in Totem got
"device busy" erro
